The study sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that between 2007 and 2012, the food industry cut an estimated total of 6.4 trillion calories from their products.
Seventy-eight calories would be about the same as an average cookie or a medium apple, and the federal government estimates an average daily diet at around 2,000 calories. The study said the calories cut averaged out to 78 calories per day for the entire U.S. population.
The 2010 pledge taken by 16 companies ��including General Mills, Campbell Soup, ConAgra Foods, Kraft Foods, Kellogg, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Hershey ��was to cut 1 trillion calories by 2012 and 1.5 trillion calories by 2015.

General Mills (NYSE: GIS ) just reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings that matched Wall Street's expectations. Revenue rose 8% in the quarter to $4.4 billion on an 11% volume increase, and earnings of $0.53 were in line with analyst estimates. For the full year, earnings of $2.69 per share were at the high end of the company's expectations. U.S. growth was pretty anemic, coming in at just 1% for the full year. But General Mills has been able to grow 24% internationally in fiscal 2013, and that has helped drive results. �

Before the opening bell on Wednesday, packaged foods manufacturer General Mills, Inc. (GIS) reported that its first quarter profit declined 16% year-over-year, despite an 8% rise in quarterly sales. However, earnings were able to meet Wall Street analysts’ expectations, while sales topped views.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota-based company posted a first quarter net income of $459.3 million, or 70 cents per share, down from the $548.9 million, or 82 cents per share, earned in the same period a year ago. According to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, the company was expected to earn 70 cents per share in the most recent quarter.
General Mills’ first quarter revenues rose to $4.37 billion, up 8% from the $4.05 billion in sales posted in the first quarter last year. On average, analysts were expecting the company to see $4.29 billion in revenues in the quarter.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ken Powell said this performance represented a solid start to the new fiscal year. “In particular, our net sales growth in the quarter reflects a healthy mix of gains from established brands, strong introductory shipments for new products, and contributions from new businesses added to our portfolio. These first-quarter results have us on track to achieve the key financial targets we’ve set for fiscal 2014.”
The company said that sales from new businesses and products contributed 5 percentage points to General Mills’ 8% total sales growth.
Looking forward, the company reaffirmed its fiscal 2014 guidance. General Mills expects revenues to grow in the low single-digits for the year, operating profits to grow in the mid single-digits, and adjusted earnings per share to come in between $2.87 and $2.90. Wall Street analysts expect the company to earn $2.92 per share in fiscal 2014.

Apple (AAPL) -- Winner It's been a while since Apple produced blowout quarterly results, but that's what happened on Wednesday. The consumer tech giant moved higher after posting better than expected earnings, margins and iPhone sales. The report wasn't perfect. Bulls will point to the 17 percent spike in iPhone units sales, but bears can counter that Apple sold 16 percent fewer iPads than it did a year earlier. However, when you tack on Apple's declaration of a stock split and a beefed-up share buyback, it was clearly a quarter for the bulls. General Mills (GIS) -- Loser Sometimes it doesn't pay to update a company's privacy policy. Cereal giant General Mills came under fire earlier this month after introducing new legal terms. The updated policy going out to anyone interacting with General Mills online would "require all disputes related to the purchase or use of any General Mills product or service to be resolved through binding arbitration." It got called out in a New York Times article, suggesting that anyone doing something as simple as using an online coupon or liking the company's Cheerios page on Facebook would not be able to sue the company. General Mills argued that the policy was being misread and misunderstood, but it reversed the language. Judging by the comments on that Cheerios page, it seems that some irate consumers aren't so quick to forgive General Mills. Amazon.com (AMZN) -- Winner One of the knocks on Amazon's new Fire TV set-top media player is that it doesn't stream HBO Go content, but Amazon and HBO parent Time Warner (TWX) have agreed to remedy the situation later this year. The company announced that it has purchased the privately held Care Pharmaceuticals, based in New South Wales, Australia. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, although Prestige Brands did admit that it would be funded by monies drawn from an existing credit facility combined with cash on hand.
