    Story So Far

Monster Beverage's "Monster Energy Ultra Red" has become one of the brand's top sellers. This product debuted in September 2013. Its Muscle Monster protein shakes are second in the ready-to-drink protein segment: convenience and gas channels.

Monster Beverage sells "alternative" beverages under names such as Monster Energy and Muscle Monster. Monster Beverage expanded its revenue, net income, and free cash flow 11%, 50%, and 275%, respectively, in the most recent quarter.

Global volume increases from its Monster Energy brand and expansion into international markets served as the primary catalysts for the increase in revenu! e. Produc! tion efficiencies and lower expenses stemming from termination of distributors, lower insurance premiums, and lower marketing expenses contributed to gains in net income.

Favorable changes in operating assets and liabilities, specifically in inventory, accounts receivable, and income taxes payable, contributed to the year-over-year gain in free cash flow.

When we look at the company's balance sheet, we see $211.35 million in cash and $402.25 million in short-term investments, totaling $613.6 million in liquid assets. This compares nicely with last year's $222.51 million in cash, $97.04 million in short-term investments, totaling $319.55 million in liquid assets. Monster continues to be debt-free, which increases the likelihood that the company will be returning more of its income to investors once its growth starts slowing down further down the line.

The most important aspect of the Monster Energy brand dominance is that it has allowed the company to expand into other beverage segments, most recently the large protein-drinks category. The company's protein brand, called Muscle Monster, has gotten off to

Best Energy Stocks For 2015

Investors seeking exposure to master limited partnerships (MLPs) have many options. There are of course conventional energy MLPs, ranging from upstream (oil and gas producers) to midstream (logistics) and downstream (refiners). MLPs also offer niche opportunities in sectors as diverse as marine shipping and propane distribution. Further afield, the MLP structure is popular with private equity shops and also used to invest in forestry, amusement parks and fertilizer production.

There are MLPs that are structured as partnerships, but have chosen to be taxed as corporations. This class will be covered in an upcoming issue. The main advantage for investors is that this structure somewhat simplifies tax reporting, while offering the attractive yields of an MLP.

Mutual funds are another way to play the MLP space in a way that simplifies tax reporting. But because these mutual funds must pay corporate income tax on their earnings, most of the tax advantage of directly investing in MLPs is lost. Many of the funds use leverage to help overcome some of this disadvantage, but this can be a risky strategy and one that adds to costs.

Nevertheless, at times the MLP-focused mutual funds may be attractive. Consider a closed-end fund (CEF). These funds trade on an exchange just like a stock or MLP unit, which means that the underlying value of the securities held by the fund can become disconnected from the price of the fund share. Some days the market capitalization of the fund is valued at more than the underlying securities (i.e., it trades at a premium) and other times the fund is valued at less than the securities it holds (i.e., it trades at a discount).

Advisors' Opinion:

The latest headlines point out that LINN is finally coming clean on its derivative costs, which shows that the company is overstating its cash flow. One article calls this a "surprise disclosure" that was "buried in a recently regulatory filing." The buried disclosure, found on page 257 of its registration statement for the joint deal with LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) for Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY  ) says that mark-to-market losses on commodity derivatives:

LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) , along with affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) , are out with first-quarter earnings. The report was below the company's guidance expectations, as production came in at 796 Million cubic feet equivalent per day, or MMcfe/d, against a guidance range of 810 MMcf/d to 845 MMcf/day for the quarter. Let's drill down a little deeper and see what happened.

Analysts at Citigroup downgraded LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO) to Neutral from Buy with a price target lowered to $31.50 from a previous $41. Shares lost 0.80 percent, closing at $27.43.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

As I write this units of LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) are heading lower while shares of affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) are following suit. The culprit is an article in Barron's on the company that is highlighting comments from a recent presentation by a hedge fund that's short the company. The article, "Twilight of a Stock-Market Darling", is one of the many recent publications on the company that have highlighted some areas of concern. Let's dig into the thesis of the recent concerns and see if we can glean some insight into what's going on.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Lights out, China
China may have its fair share of struggles -- which has caused its strong economy to back off its 30-year average growth rate of 10% -- but when push comes to shove, plenty of investors are still paying close attention to multinational companies making investments in China. However, if there were one sector with a gigantic "beware" stamp attached to it, it would be Chinese solar panel producers like Hanwha SolarOne (NASDAQ: HSOL  ) .

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Hanwha SolarOne (HSOL), which manufactures a number of silicon ingots, PV cells and PV modules using advanced manufacturing process technologies. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up 301%.

If you take a look at the chart for Hanwha SolarOne, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $2.60 to its recent high of $4.28 a share. During that uptrend, shares of HSOL have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of HSOL within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in HSOL if it manages to break out above its 52-week high at $4.28 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.61 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then HSOL will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at $6 to $7 a share.

Traders can look to buy HSOL off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average at $3.40 a share, or near more support at $3.35 a share. One can also buy HSOL off strength once it clears $4.28 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

As soon as BlackBerry (BBRY) announced its manufacturing deal with the Chinese manufacturer Foxconn, Mike Lazaridis, BlackBerry's co founder, cut his position by just over three million shares – he now holds less than 5% of the former smart phone leader's shares. Evidently, Lazaridis sees that the chances of the company going into a death spiral have substantially! increase! d. After all, the shares are down by 37% year-to-date, so he wouldn’t have sold if he trusted on the company's current turnaround plans. Let's take a look at BlackBerry's future.

Khan was not incredibly active in the quarter, which isnt surprising — he follows strict buying criteria related to book value and margin of safety, and tends to hold for much longer than most investors. Khan Brothers did take a stake in embattled smart phone company Blackberry (BBRY), which has gone on the auction block. The firm also upped its stake in BP (BP) by more than 500% during the third quarter and bought more shares of New York Community Bank (NYCB).

To begin with, innovation is everything. Apple has been the king of innovators for years, but it hasn't truly changed the game since it introduced the iPad a few years ago. In the smartphone sector, BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY  ) has been even worse. It took countless delays and nearly two years to introduce its new BlackBerry Q10 and Z10, which run on its own proprietary operating system. Thus far, reaction to the new smartphones has been lukewarm at best, as BlackBerry brought up the caboose in terms of smartphone brand loyalty.

Top 5 Tech Companies To Own For 2014

Some of the country once iconic brands — in retail, consumer products and beer — are now shells of their former selves. Some of America’s restaurants, too, are not what they used to be. In the past 10 years, several of the nation’s biggest restaurant chains have lost more than 50% of their sales and have closed hundreds of locations nationwide.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed data provided by food industry consulting and research firm Technomic to determine the 10 large restaurant chains with the biggest decline in locations and sales between 2002 and 2012. Notably, Bennigan’s sales plunged by more than 90% between 2002 and 2012. In 2002, there were 1,688 TCBY in the U.S. As of last year, there were just 500.

According to Technomic executive vice president Darren Tristano, many of these struggling restaurants suffer from extremely stiff competition in their segments. The majority of these are full-service restaurants. This segment in particular, explained Tristano, is extremely competitive. Companies like LongHorn Steakhouse, Don Pablo, and Fazoli, have been hurt by the success of companies like Olive Garden and LongHorn. They have also lost market share to non-full service companies like Chipotle and Domino.

The biggest new holdings are Philip Morris International and Reinsurance Group of America (NYSE: RGA  ) . Other new holdings of interest include Radian Group (NYSE: RDN  ) . To say that mortgage insurer Radian had a good past year would be an understatement, as the stock more than tripled. That's partly due to expectations of a boom in business as the housing market picks up, with tighter lending rules probably leading to greater need for the coverage. The stock recently got an upgrade, with an analyst expecting a possibly bumpy 2013 because of a high level of delinquent loans, but much smoother sailing in following years.

The most straightforward way for an American stock investor to use common stocks to get Japanese exposure is to buy shares of Aflac (AFL). When you read the balance sheet, you will see that Aflac is really a Japanese company camouflaged as an American insurance company. Check out this part from the company's latest news release:

  • [By Dividend Growth Investor]

Aflac Incorporated (AFL), through its subsidiary, American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus, provides supplemental health and life insurance products. Aflac has managed to boost dividends for 30 years in a row, and has a ten year dividend growth rate of 19.30%/annum. The company is really cheap at 9.70 times earnings, but has the capacity to grow profits in the foreseeable future through strategic partnerships in Japan and US markets and increasing number of sales associates. One of the opportunities for growth could be US, which accounts for roughly only a quarter of revenues. It is amazing that a company deriving 70-75% of revenues from Japan could achieve such astounding growth over the past 30 years. Currently, the stock trades at 9.70 times earnings and yields 2.30%.
