Top 10 Asian Stocks To Own For 2014

Samsung's (NASDAQOTH: SSNLF  ) upcoming flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 4, will make its sales debut in South Korea and China before the end of the month, ahead of Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) competing iPhone 6 Plus.

In general, Asian markets tend to be more favorable to phablets than other regions, and the Galaxy Note 4's early launch may give the device a slight edge over the iPhone 6 Plus, which is likely to be its most direct competitor.

Apple and Samsung's staggered release dates
Apple has released the iPhone 6 Plus in a handful of countries already, including the U.S., Japan, and Singapore. On September 26, Apple's phablet is expected to debut in 20 additional nations, mostly in Europe.

The timing of its release in China, however, has remained a mystery, with some outlets suggesting that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus could be delayed until early next year. On Tuesday, Reuters reported that Chinese regulators were in the final stages of reviewing the smaller iPhone 6 for sales approval -- presumably, the iPhone 6 Plus would be included in that review, but either way, there's still no firm release date.

The company manufactures and sells cigarettes through its Liggett Group and Vector Tobacco subsidiaries under the Pyramid, Grand Prix, Liggett Select, and Eve brands. The company is the fourth-largest cigarette manufacturer in the U.S. behind giants Altria (NYSE: MO  ) , Lorillard, and Reynolds American. There are some advantages to being small. Vector has a cost advantage stemming from the settlement between Vector and the U.S.: The company does not have to make annual payments unless its market share exceeds 1.65% of the U.S. market. As such, the company positions its brands as discount cigarettes to capitalize on its advantage.

At the time of the breakup, the American Tobacco Trust controlled or held significant interests in 65 subsidiary companies in the United States, as well as two British companies. These interests were eventually separated into 14 different tobacco companies, of which four became an American tobacco oligopoly to replace the monopoly: R. J. Reynolds (now Reynolds American), Liggett and Myers (now Vector Group (NYSE: VGR  ) ), Lorillard (NYSE: LO  ) , and a diminished American Tobacco.

  • [By Sean Williams]

But, it isn't just Lorillard's premium brands that are doing the talking! Lorillard's discount brands, such as Maverick and Old Gold, are giving discount-only brand Vector Group (NYSE: VGR  ) , as well as traditionally bigger tobacco producers Altria and Reynolds American a run for their money. This helped push Lorillard's overall cigarette market share up 0.4% year over year to 14.9%. Not surprisingly, Lorillard has delivered market share increases in each of the past 10 years!

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

BioFuel Energy (BIOF) is engaged in the production and sale of ethanol and its co-products through its two ethanol production facilities located in Nebraska and Minnesota. This stock closed up 9.4% to $4.04 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $3.69-$4.04

    52-Week Range: $2.70-$10.75

    Tuesday's Volume: 152,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 57,949

From a technical perspective, BIOF soared higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $3.76 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of BIOF within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if BIOF manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.99 to $4.12 with high volume. At last check, BIOF hit an intraday high of $4.04 and volume was well above its three-month average action of 57,949 shares.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BIOF as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $3.76 or above more near-term support at $3.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 57,949 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then BIOF will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day of $4.63 to $5.19. Any high-volume move above $5.19 will then put $5.50 to $6 within range for shares of BIOF.
