Top Long Term Stocks For 2015

Global equity markets shrugged off concerns abou t central bank tapering and continued to gain momentum in the fourth quarter, capping off another excellent year for equity returns. Despite carrying cash reserves that ranged from approximately 10. 9% to as much as 20.3%, a ll four of the Tweedy, Browne Funds finished the quarter and year on a str ong note, producing annual returns between 18.77% and 22.68%.

As we write, the S&P 500 and the MSCI World Index are near or at all-time highs; the cyclically adjusted Shiller P/E is at 26X earnings versus 15. 9X earnings for its long term median; global IPO markets are heating up; corporate lending standards are once again deteriorating (covenant-lite loans are back); and many of the stocks we own and follow ar e now trading at or near our estimates of intrinsic value. That said, we are comfortable with our port folios' current holdings, and continue to search the globe for individual securities that fit our demand ing criteria. While bargain hunting is currently challenging, we remain confident that our patience will be rewarded.

The Company is discovering and developing novel inhibitors designed for use against the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Phase II studies have demonstrated the efficacy of ABT-450/r in patients with chronic HCV, and other interferon-free Phase II studies of ABT-450-containing regimens continue. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By George Budwell]

Normally, such strong efficacy results would be hailed as a major achievement. However, these results are actually less impressive than those by competing drug's developed by AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV  ) , Enanta Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ENTA  ) and Gilead. Bristol-Myers' therapy also has a treatment duration double that of Gilead's drug Sovaldi for genotype 1 patients. So, while these results are impressive in their own right, the therapy's commercial prospects may be limited due to the presence of superior competitors in the market.

And lastly I'll go into healthcare, which is kind of a growth cyclical type name. It's partially defensive, partially growth. I think the more growth-oriented section of healthcare would be biotech, and right now, a very promising biotech stock is Enanta Pharmaceuticals. That's a NASDAQ stock; ticker symbol (ENTA).

The next big thing in treating hepatitis-C
The other currently experimental therapy very likely to make it onto the FDA's desk before the midpoint of 2014 is AbbVie's (NYSE: ABBV  ) direct-acting antiviral combo drug. In similar fashion to Sovaldi, this DAA-combo therapy, which includes ABT-450 from Enanta Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ENTA  ) , is running six confirmatory late-stage trials on various genotypes. There are, however, two primary differences between AbbVie's DAA-combo therapy and Sovaldi.

Build-A-Bear Workshop (NYSE: BBW).Unlike traditional toy manufacturers that make toys and games and distribute them to retailers, Build-A-Bear has flipped the toy-making concept on its ear. The idea of making a stuffed animal from scratch has taken the toy market by storm, and has carved out a nice little niche market for the company.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Anh HOANG]

PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) and Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) have been in a cola war for many years. While PepsiCo targets younger generations of soda drinkers, Coca-Cola's tends to control the older demographics. Coca-Cola has always stayed ahead in the soft drink battle, and it now has more than 40% market share in the carbonated soft drink market. PepsiCo ranks second with only 28% market share. However, PepsiCo has foughtback aggressively, especially in the restaurant chain market. For instance, PepsiCo has recentlyreplaced Coca-Cola as the beverage supplier of fast-growing restaurant chainBuffalo Wild Wings (NASDAQ: BWLD  ) .

  • [By Dividend Mantra] boosted its quarterly dividend from $0.5675 per share to $0.655. This amounts to a 15.4% raise for shareholders, which is fantastic. Pepsi now has 42 years of dividend growth under its belt, and with a healthy payout ratio of 61.5% there should be plenty of dividend raises in the future. Shares now yield 3.29%, which is rather attractive in this market from a high quality company like Pepsi. The company also announced plans to increase its share buyback program to nearly $5 billion in 2014. Overall, not much to dislike here from Pepsi. I continue to view this company as a core holding for me.

Digital Realty Trust, Inc. (DLR) recently gave shareholders a raise on the order of 6.4%, with a new quarterly dividend payout of $0.83 per share over the old rate of $0.78. This is a rather stout raise considering that DLR shares now yield 6.2% based on the new payout. I purchased shares in DLR as it continued to slide last year, reaching new low after new low. But I was confident in the REIT back then, and I remain so now. This is now 10 years of consecutive dividend growth for the trust, and I see no real reason this won't continue for the foreseeable future. However, as a tech play on demand for cloud computing I'd like for my position in DLR to remain relatively small.

Stryker Corporation (SYK) increased its quarterly per share dividend by 15.1%, now paying out $0.3050. This represents an increase of $0.04 over the old dividend of $0.2650. Another very solid increase here, and SYK has increased its dividend for 21 consecutive years. The yield on the new payout is 1.47%. I've never taken a good look at Stryker because its yield is usually too low for me to consider it as a potential investment based on my income requirements, but the company continues to reward shareholders very well and I do quite like the business model of medical equipment. This is definitely a company I'd like to take a look at.

Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO) upped its quarterly dividend

  • [By Sean Williams]

Foreign currency translation isn't the only concern. Competition among snack-food companies is increasing by leaps and bounds outside the United States so much so that activist investor Nelson Peltz, the head of Trian Fund Management, suggested that PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) purchase Mondelez and spin off its beverage operations. The idea would make a lot of sense given the increased levels of competition between the two companies, but PepsiCo doesn't appear keen on the idea.
